Introduction

About Maternity Matters

Hello and welcome to Maternity Matters. I'm Wendy Burton, a GP from Brisbane, and I passionately believe that maternity is everybody's business. I'd like to share with you information I wish was better known before, during and after pregnancy, as well as answer questions women and their families commonly ask. I'll also talk to some of the experts in my world about what it is they wish was better known and discuss questions they are commonly asked.

Importantly

There is wonderful and terrible information available online and I have links to some of the wonderful websites. So please, take a moment to have a look around my site and feel free to share whatever you find useful. The advice given is, of course, general—it is not individual clinical advice. It is important that you talk to your midwife or doctor about your own particular situation rather than rely on anything on this or other websites. Oh, and if you don’t yet have a GP you know and trust, please find one. Trust me, you will need a good GP, especially once baby is born!

Dr Wendy Burton

I'm a GP/family doctor from Brisbane, Australia, looking after people from preconception to end of life. I also worked for almost 20 years at a local, state and national level to educate and improve connections and communication between the healthcare sectors. My aim is to build a healthier community by improving health outcomes for women and their families.
I also have a website to showcase the positive work being done in general practice, GPs-Can and I am a “book” in the GP Living Library.

In addition to my work as a GP, my current and previous roles include*:
Chair of the Antenatal/Postnatal Specific Interest Group for the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners 2016 - 2023
Chair and facilitator of the Mater Mothers Hospital Shared Antenatal Care Alignment 2005 - 2023
Member of the (Qld) Statewide Maternity and Neonatal Clinical Network Steering Committee from 2010 - 2022
Maternity Lead, Brisbane South Primary Health Network 2015-2022
Mental Health Lead, Brisbane South Primary Health Network 2022 - current
